The Career Crisis We Can’t Ignore – And How We’re Changing It in 2025!

The workforce is brimming with untapped potential - but outdated systems, invisible barriers and a lack of honest, forward-thinking support continue to hold millions back from thriving.  Within my own Consultancy Practice, as a Mentor for The Kings Trust and as an Ambassador for SWA Society Without Abuse (formerly Swindon Women's Aid) , I see incredible talent from all walks of life, and we’ve been tackling these challenges head-on, helping individuals break through career roadblocks, regain confidence and step into new phases of their careers to ensure purpose-led, fulfilling careers.  But it’s time to go bigger, make a greater impact and push for real change in these areas.

There are three major challenges that continue to limit careers, stifle growth and prevent people from realising their full potential. These issues aren’t just obstacles, they’re opportunities for transformation.  And we intend to have a huge impact in positively transforming these areas in 2025.

So, what are the hard-hitting truths we need to face?

  1. Young people are being set up to fail!  Graduates and early career professionals are stepping into the job market misguided by outdated advice and false narratives about today’s employment landscape. They face recruitment bias, unrealistic expectations of success, and a system that pushes them into rigid, linear career paths. Instead of being encouraged to explore their true potential, they are told to prioritize existing skills or education, chase prestige over purpose, and take the first job that comes their way - often without clarity on what a fulfilling, sustainable career looks like for them.  The result? A generation of frustrated, undervalued professionals, many settling for unskilled work, disconnected from their careers, and burdened by debt. This lack of alignment isn’t just impacting mental health and motivation—it’s also hurting employers, who are seeing lower productivity, reduced engagement, and declining retention rates. The cost? Higher recruitment and training expenses, and a workforce that struggles to find meaning and long-term success.  The system is failing both young professionals and businesses. It’s time to change the way we approach early careers - because talent deserves direction, not disillusionment.

  1. Women are struggling to re-enter the workforce after parenting!  Highly skilled, experienced women shouldn’t have to fight to return to careers they’ve worked hard for - yet that’s the reality for far too many.  After taking time out for parenting, they face recruitment bias, outdated hiring practices, systematic barriers and a severe lack of support that makes re-entering the workforce far harder than it should be.  The Careers After Babies report revealed that 85% of mothers leave full-time employment within three years of their first child.  People Management reported that 69% of women felt that career breaks diminished their self-assurance, leaving them feeling undervalued and disconnected from a purpose and their professional selves.  Instead of being valued for their transferable skills, resilience and leadership, many women are overlooked, and their careers take a backseat to flexibility. The result? A huge economic loss as businesses are missing out on a powerhouse of talent, while outdated structures force women into jobs beneath their capabilities.  A frustrated, underutilised workforce and companies struggling with retention, productivity, and diversity.  It’s time to change the narrative. Women returning to work don’t need to settle!  There are exciting, new innovative working models that allow women to investigate all the exciting possibilities and build a career that embraces not only growth and balance, but also purpose, fulfilment and a work/life balance!

  1. Failing Talent from Disadvantaged Backgrounds!  The UK workforce should reflect the diversity, talent and resilience of its people, but systemic barriers continue to shut too many individuals out of meaningful career opportunities.  Did you know that 53.3% of the UK workforce comes from a disadvantaged background, whether due to socio-economic status, ethnicity, or disability?  That means 1 in 2 workers face systemic barriers to career progression, highlighting the urgent need for fairer hiring practices, greater access to opportunities and a truly inclusive workforce.  For individuals facing poverty, rural inequality, neurodivergence, disability, domestic abuse or other life challenges, the odds are even steeper.  Traditional hiring systems continue to favour those with privilege, leaving talent locked out of opportunities, undervalued and overlooked.  Imperial College London reported that 75% of positions are filled through the hidden job market, meaning these roles are never publicly advertised, making it even harder for underrepresented professionals to break in. But this isn’t just a fairness issue—it’s an economic and business crisis.   Companies that embrace diverse hiring don’t just build fairer workplaces—they perform better.  Research consistently shows that diverse teams drive innovation, increase profitability and better reflect the needs of a multicultural, modern UK.  The result? A frustrated, underutilised workforce and businesses that are missing out on exceptional talent while struggling with retention, productivity and stagnation.  It’s time to break the cycle, remove outdated barriers and unlock the full potential of the UK workforce.

This isn’t just a personal struggle for many, it’s a systemic failure.  It’s time to change the narrative because the problem isn’t talent – it’s access, confidence and the right support.  And that’s where we step in!  So, how are we impacting this area and what could this mean for people you know that are struggling right now?

This is our impact transformational promise for 2025:

  1. Redefining Career Education: Transforming How Students & Graduates Build Their Futures: Today’s students are being prepared for jobs that no longer exist, while lacking the skills for the jobs that do. Traditional career advice is failing them, and many graduates feel lost, unsure of how to align their skills with real job opportunities so that they can build a roadmap that prioritises career fulfilment, acceleration and longevity.  We’re revolutionising career education by providing honest, forward-thinking career consultancy that aligns passions, skills and industry trends.  Through career roadmaps, innovative methodologies and real-world insights, we are empowering the next generation to step into the workplace with clarity, confidence and resilience.  To know they are on the right path to complement their interests, education and skills whilst prioritising a career that is authentic and that delivers meaningful work with purpose and career longevity for growth.  Our Promise: We will impact 1,000 students and graduates through workshops, mentorship and strategic career consultancy, equipping them to build authentic, sustainable and passion-driven careers.

  1. Reigniting Careers: Empowering Women Returners: Women shouldn’t have to choose between parenting and career progression, they deserve both.  Yet, too many feel lost, overlooked or undervalued when returning to work. The UK economy is missing out on an immense pool of female talent, but we are here to change that narrative.  Through strategic alliances [insert here], alongside powerful workshops, tailored career consultancy and in-depth tailored career investigations, we will equip women with the clarity, confidence and career strategies they need to step back into work on their own terms. By helping them identify roles that maximise their transferable skills, unlock their full potential, and embrace new interests and opportunities, we will empower them to build fulfilling, flexible careers that accelerate growth, create long-term success and give them the autonomy they deserve.  The future of work should include the incredible talent of women who are ready to thrive—let’s make sure they do. Our Promise: We will dedicate 20% of client engagements to supporting women returning to work; helping them build flexible, fulfilling and growth-driven careers through mentorship, career consultancy and career programs.

  1. Breaking Barriers: Unlocking Potential for Talent from Disadvantaged Backgrounds: Talent is everywhere, but opportunity is not. Too many skilled professionals from disadvantaged backgrounds struggle to break into high-growth industries.  Not because of a lack of ability, but due to systemic barriers, a lack of guidance and limited access to the networks that open doors.  We are changing this story.  By collaborating with The Kings Trust, The SWA and through our own collaborations, our mission is to bridge the gap, helping talent from all backgrounds recognise their full worth, access meaningful career consultancy and leverage innovative career strategies that propel them forward. This is about stepping into the right roles, and thriving, ensuring that potential, not privilege, defines opportunity.  Our Promise: We will dedicate 20% of our client engagements to coaching and mentoring individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, ensuring that talent is recognised, nurtured and elevated regardless of where someone starts.  Because real change happens when everyone has a fair chance to succeed.

I am offering 10, complimentary 45-minute sessions with me in February to kick start this initiative.  If you think you know someone who needs support in these areas, please do forward this to them.
